. . . and I cannot but think these lines of Mr. Pope as
applicable to vice in politics, as to vice in ethics.
  Vice is a monster of so horrid mein, 
  As to be hated, needs but to be seen;
  Yet seen too oft, familiar with her face, 
  We first endure, then pity, then embrace.
